Do you find exercising a drag - something you dread? Do you think exercising is a complicated ritual you simply don't have time for? How about making physical activity a part of your daily life by exercising without even knowing it – at home, work and at play?
At home
Working out at home is convenient, comfortable and safe. It also gives you more time to get things done, including combining exercise with other activities. If you're watching TV, lie on the floor and do leg lifts or stomach crunches, or ride your exercise bike while watching your favourite programme.
Mow the lawn, work in the garden, rake leaves, dig and prune the roses. Go for a brisk walk before breakfast or after dinner. Ride your bike to the shop rather than taking the car. Walk the dog regularly. Park further away from the shopping centre and walk the extra distance.
At work
Being stuck at the office for most of the day needn't mean we run to fat. Increase your physical energy during the work day by keeping active – take the stairs instead of the lift; walk down the corridor to speak with someone rather than phoning or e-mailing them; stand while speaking on the phone; get off the bus a few streets early and walk the rest of the way home; walk around the airport while waiting to catch a flight; stay in hotels with gyms or swimming pools while on business trips; take a skipping rope with you when you travel; initiate a recreation league at your company; schedule your exercise time in your diary and treat it as any other important appointment.
At play
Make exercise fun. Too often, people regard exercising as boring and unpleasant, but if they had something to look forward to, they'd want to exercise more often – and enjoy it more. Play and recreation are important for good health. Plan family outings and holidays that include physical activity (hiking, biking or swimming, etc.) See the sights in new cities by walking, jogging or cycling.
Make a date with a friend to enjoy your favourite physical activities. Play your favourite music while exercising – it'll motivate you. At the beach, play bat and ball, run or fly a kite. When golfing, walk instead of using a cart. Play singles tennis instead of doubles. Go for brisk walks with friends.
In essence, what you need to do – if you want to enjoy the multiple benefits of exercise - is to use your imagination and get going. Even ten minutes a day can make a difference - and may be ten minutes more than you're probably doing right now!
